Note: Any mixed group will fall under the category of the largest subject.
All rules stated apply to all TTAI competitions, unless otherwise stated.

Rules for Habitat Category

    1. Must consist of 3 elements. Example: wood, sand, and rocks.
    2. Shoulder mount pedestal: Pedestral shall count as one element.
    3. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places will be awarded per the NTA score sheet.
    4. Best of Category and Paul Provenzano awards will not be awarded.
    5. Habitat will be judged as a seperate item. If combined with a mount it will be judged per NTA standards and the scores will be combined.
    6. There will be a seperate habitat judge.
    7. There will be no protest option.
    8. Entry fee will be $10.00
    9. Habitat entries must include a mount.

Youth Division

    1. Who May Compete: No one over the age of 16 may compete in this division.
    2. Judging: Judges for this division will be qualified and predetermined. Competitors may get a critique from the judge, only if time constraints allow for one.
    3. Entry Fees: There is no entry fee to compete in this division.
    4. Awards: All children competing will receive a ribbon. Ages 8 and under will receive ribbons only. Ages 9-16 will receive a proper score sheet and ribbons. The age of the competitor will be placed on the mount entry card. Plaques will be awarded for the highest score in each age group. The judge will choose a "Best of Division" for a predetermined prize.
    5. Multiple Entries: Multiple entries are allowed.
    6. Individual Work: All work must be done solely by the competitor. Adult supervision and help is allowed but must be in a strictly "Hands Off" manor.

Educational Division

If you are interested in improving your work and seeing how competitions operate, the Educational Division is the place for you.

    1. Who May Compete: All members of the TTAI, any state bordering Texas, NTA, or the UTA may compete in this division, proof of membership must be shown at registration.
    2. Judging: All peices in this division wil be critiqued by the same judges as in all other divisions. The official NTA score sheet will be used, but there will be no points totaled or deducted. In other words, you will receive a pure and simple critique of your work.
    3. Awards: There will be no ribbons awarded, but all competitors will receive a Certificate of Participation.
    4. Multiple Entries: There is no limit to the number of mounts a member can enter in this division.
    5. Individual Work: All taxidermy procedures must be done by the individual competitor and certified as such by his or her signature at the time of registration.
    6. Reproductions & Reproduction Parts: Commercial blanks and parts are allowed if the prepararion and painting is done by the competitor.
    7. Freeze Dry: Only specimens that have been completely skinned and mounted on a mannikin prior to any freeze dry preservation are allowed. All finish work and painting must be completed by competitor.


Amateur Division

The Amateur Division is one step above the Educational Division. This competition is geared toward the commercial taxidermist and hobbyist wishing to have their work graded on a Commercial basis.

    1. Who May Compete: All members of the TTAI, any state bordering Texas, NTA, or UTA may compete in this division, proof of membership must be shown at registration.
    2. Judging: Mounts in this division will be judged seperately and independently on a "commercial grade" basis. Judging will be less indepth and more lenient than the Professional and Masters Divisions. Points from this division will not count towards the TTAI Paul Provenzano Award.
    3. Awards: Multiple first, second, third, and honorable mention ribbons will be awarded.
    4. Multiple Entries: There is no limit to the number of mounts a member can enter in this division.
    5. Individual Work: All taxidermy procedures must be done by the individual competitor and certified as such by his or her signature at the time of registration.
    6. Reproductions & Reproduction Parts: Commercial blanks and parts are allowed if the preparation and painting is done by the competitor.
    7. Freeze Dry: Only specimens that have been completely skinned and mounted on a mannikin prior to any freeze dry preservation are allowed. All finish work and painting must be completed by competitor.

Professional Division

he Professional Division is for the taxidermist who wishes to put their skills to a much higher test. Creativity, artistic merit, and attention to details are judged in this division.

    1. Who May Compete: All members of the TTAI, any state bordering Texas, NTA, or the UTA may compete in this division, proof of membership must be shown at registration. Members who have won two blue ribbons in a particular category must advance to the Masters Division in that category only.
    2. Judging: Mounts in this division must be technically correct, artistically oriented as well as creative. Points earned in this division will count towards the Paul Provenzano Award.
    3. Awards: Multiple Winners: First, Second, Third, and Homnorable Mention ribbons will be larger than the ones given in the Amateur Division. A plaque award for "Best of Category" may be given in all nine categories. In the event of a tie, duplicate plaques will be awarded and any additional prizes will be split. There will be a Judges Choice Award given in thes division, seperate from the Masters Division.
    4. Multiple Entries: There is no limit to the number of entries a member may enter in this division.
    5. Individual Work: All taxidermy procedures must be done by the individual competitor and certified as such by his or her signature at the time of registration.
    6. Reproductions & Reproduction Parts: Commercial blanks and parts are allowed if the preparation and painting is done by the competitor.
    7. Freeze Dry: Only specimens that have been completely skinned and mounted on a mannikin prior to any freeze dry preservation are allowed. All finish work and painting must be completed by competitor.
    8. Habitat: Habitats may be entered with a mount. Habitats are scored on a seperate score sheet and the score is averaged with the score of the mount for a final score. Habitat may raise or lower the final score.

Masters Division

The Maters Division is the most elite division in the TTAI competition. The learning is over and the competitor knows what is expected of a worls class mount. You must compete in this division to earn the title "Best in Texas".

    1. Who May Compete: All members of the TTAI, any state bordering Texas, NTA, or the UTA may compete in this division, proof of membership must be shown at registration.
    2. Judging: Judging in this division will be the most intense of all the divisions. Painstaking attention to detail and artistic craftsmanship are required in the division.
    3. Awards: Multiple Winners; First, Second, and Third place ribbons will be larger than the ones given in the Professional division. A plaque award for "Best in Texas" may be given in all nine categories. All other mounts will be given Masters Division Ribbons based on their numerical score. In the event of a tie, duplicate plaques will be awarded and any additional prizes will be split. There will be a Judges Choice Award given in the division, seperate from the Profeesional division.
    4. Multiple Entries: There is no limit to the number of entries a member may enter in the division.
    5. Indidvidual Work: All taxidermy procedures must be done by the individual competitor and certrified by his or her signature at the time of registration.
    6. Reproductions & Reproduction Parts: Commercial blanks and parts are allowed if all the preparation and painting is done by competitor.
    7. Freeze Dry: Only specimens that have been completely skinned and mannikin prior to any freeze dry preservation are allowed. All finish work and painting must be completed by the competitor.
    8. Habitat: Habitats may be entered with the mount. Habitats are scored on a seperate score sheet and the score is averaged with the score of the mount for the final score. Habitat may raise or lower the final score.

Studio Division

The Studio Division is for competition pieces that are created by one or more artists. The piece is entered under the studio name and each artist is listed as a creator of the piece. This is the only real "head to head" competition the TTAI offers, and is a great opportunity for a studio to be proclaimed as the "Best Studio in Texas".

    1. Who May Compete: All creators of the piece must be current TTAI members and Texas residents.
    2. Judging: Judging in this division is unique to any other division in the TTAI competition. Every registered taxidermist attending the show will receive one ballot to be cast for one mount in the STudio Division. This ballot should not be confused with the Peoples Choice ballot. Each judge will also receive 10 ballots to be cast for the entry or entries of their choice. The judges can use their ballots on one or several pieces. The members votes will be addeed to the judges votes for the final results, the total amount of votes will determine the winners. In case of a tie trhe judges will determine winner.
    3. Awards: There will be one first place, one second place, and one third place awarded.
    4. Multiple Entries: There is a lmit of one entry per studio or group.
    5. Reproductions & Reproduction Parts: Commercial blanks and parts are allowed if all the preparation and painting is done by the competitor.
    6. Freeze Dry: Only specimens that have been completely skinned and mounted on a mannikin prior to any freeze dry preservation are allowed. All finish work and painting must be completed by the competitor.
    7. Habitat: Judges will be instructed to consider habitat in the decisions.

      *Note*
      Any mount entered in the Studio Division will not be able to be used in any other division, nor will they be eligible for any of the other major awards. No points from this division can be used toward any special Texas awards.

Texas Best All Around

The Texas Best All Around Award is the highest achievement a wildlife artistan reach. It requires a vast knowledge in every field of taxidermy, and is for the artist who wishes to excel in all aspects of the art form.

    1. Who May Compete: This competion is for current TTAI members who are Texas residents only.
    2. Entries: The contestant must enter the five categories listed below:
    3. One Gamehead (includes Whitetail deer and half-life size mounts)
    4. One Bird mount
    5. One Life-size Mammal
    6. One Fish or Reptile or Replica
    7. A habitat scene must be entered with one of the four above entries.
    8. Judging: This is a Judges Choice Award. Entries will first be placed in their respective categories for regular judging (i.e.: Masters Gamehead, Professional Birds, etc.) Entries will then be grouped in a special area for the Texas Best All Around Judging, after regular judging and before the ribbons are hung. The score given to the individual pieces are not relevant to this competition. All five pieces entered will be judged as a group. The judges will discuss and decide the winner.
    9. Awards: First, Second, and Third place trophies will be awarded, plus cash prizes of $600.00 for first, $300.00 for second, and $100.00 for third place.

    Rules:

      1. All pieces to be considered for Best All Around must be entered in either Professional or Masters Divisions and appropriate entry fees apply. The competitor will then give the Competition Chairman a signed statement with entry numbers and categories listed.

      There is an EXTRA $30.00 entry fee for Texas Best All Around.

      If more than one mount is entered on a single base the competitor must specify which is to be entered in Texas Best All Around.

      There are no protests allowed in the competition.

         

    Competitor's Award:

    This award is designed for competitors who enter multiple pieces, but only in one or two categories. This award does not take the place of the Texas Best All Around Taxidermist award, and entries for either award are not qualified for the other, i.e.: Entries for the TBA do not qualify for the Competitor's award and vice-versa.
    1. Who may compete: This competition is open to any taxidermist in the Masters or Professional divsions.
    2. Entries: The contestant must enter four (4) pieces. The pieces may be any category or combination of categories, i.e.: 3 birds and 1gamehead: 4 gameheads; 3 fish and 1 life-size mammal, etc. All pieces entered must be in either profesional and/or masters division.
    3. Judging: Highest combined score for the four pieces wins.
    4. Awards: One winner receives $250.00 and a trophy.
    5. Fee: $25.00
    6. All pieces considered for the competitor's award must be entered in either the professional or masters division and appropriate fees apply. The competitor will give the competition chairman a statement upon check-in, indicating that the four pieces are also to be considered for the Competitors Award.
    • If more than one (1) piece is entered on a single base, all pieces must be considered.
    • There are no protests allowed in this competition.
    • Habitat is not required for this award.
